The Desierto de Tabernas is the supposedly only desert in Europe (a semi-desert according to official criteria). The Sierra Nevada in the west and more of the many Spanish sierras in the north and south-southeast keep clouds away and allow little precipitation. The area is dominated by canyons, which were washed out by the rare rains for a long time.
