Spain Sakoneta beach

This beach is one of the most amazing in Spain to shoot flysch rocks.

Photography Tips

Come here at sunset or sunrise, and bring your rubber boots to keep dry and safe. Be prepared to walk 10 to 20 minutes before reaching the beach.

Travel Information

Come by car and park along the railway. Then cross the railway on foot and walk down the road towards the sea.

There are two options to get to the beach:

1) Continue straight down the road and pass through the farm. There are a number of dogs that you will be quite close to and they will bark a lot. They are on chains.

2) About 20m after you cross the railway there is a path heading left up the hill through a metal gate. Take this path and continue up through the trees. Go through a second gate and you emerge in a field, continue up and you will soon see great views of the coastline and see the farm below you to the right. You can see the beach at this point, just continue down the hill and it is easy to access. This route is more effort than walking down the road but you avoid the dogs.

Hi Julien, I want to take landscapes and seascapes (long exposures) from the northern coast (from Bilbao to gijon). What do you think is the best month to take these photos? July/August is possible?

Is there a way to go around the farm? I went there this morning but it was too dark to find a way past the farm and the dogs were very loud, was not sure if they were chained up or not so turned back.

It seems possible to use a footpath on your left before you reach the farm when you come from the parking. I never used it, since the dogs were chained when I went there, but a friend of mine did. It is probably easier to go there at sunset, since there is still light when you arrive.

I made it! What a beautiful location. There is indeed a path to the left. I have submitted an update to the travel instructions with some details :)
