United Kingdom Carter Bar
Carter Bar marks the border between England and Scotland, set high in the Cheviot Hills. By day, the views stretch out across wild, rolling landscapes. By night, the sky transforms into a glittering canvas — one of the best star-viewing locations in the area, thanks to minimal light pollution. It’s a moment where two nations meet beneath the infinite stars.
Photography Tips
Bring a sturdy tripod, a wide lens (f/2.8 or lower if possible), and set your focus manually to infinity. Try the “500 rule” — 500 ÷ focal length ≈ max seconds before star trails appear. Use a remote shutter or timer to keep the camera shake-free. Most importantly, be patient; letting your eyes adjust reveals even more stars than the camera can.
Travel Information
Carter Bar is right on the A68, roughly halfway between Newcastle and Edinburgh, near Jedburgh. There’s a roadside parking area directly beside the border stone — simply step out, look up, and enjoy a postcard view of the night sky.
