The blue hour at Bowmore Harbour is particularly atmospheric. As daylight fades, the sky deepens into rich cobalt and indigo tones, The white walls of Bowmore Distillery take on a cooler, almost luminous quality against the darkening sky, and reflections in the water become smoother and more abstract.
Long exposures during blue hour emphasize the stillness of Loch Indaal, smoothing the sea into a mirror-like surface and creating a calm, contemplative mood that contrasts beautifully with the warmer drama of sunset. This is an excellent time for photographers looking to capture a quieter, more timeless interpretation of Islay’s coastal character

Photography Tips

The best times for long exposure shots at Bowmore Harbour are sunset and blue hour, when light levels are low enough to allow longer shutter speeds while the sky still holds colour, producing smooth water and soft reflections of the distillery. Usage of ND filters and a tripod is recommended.
