Rubha nan Gall Lighthouse sits on the northeastern tip of the Isle of Mull, marking the northern entrance to the Sound of Mull. Built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson, it stands in a beautifully remote setting reached only by a coastal footpath from Tobermory. The white cylindrical tower contrasts dramatically with sea, sky, and the wooded slopes around Stranger’s Point.

Photography Tips

Stop at the Memorial to Robert John Brown for a great view towards the lighthouse, and use long exposures with ND filters and a sturdy tripod to smooth the water, balance the highlights, and create a more atmospheric composition before continuing along the coastal path. Use a moderate wide angle lense to include the coastline as foreground (30mm-ish) or a telehoto lense (200mm-ish) to isolate the lighthouse from the Memorial to Robert John Brown location.
