Travel Information
The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument is probably something of an insider tip, with particularly beautiful and extreme landscapes. However, they are difficult to reach, the few roads are four-wheel drive tracks. Permits are required.
One route in a north-south direction through the park is generally passable, even without four-wheel drive. But this unpaved road is treacherous. It is not a gravel road, so it only has a few short sections of washboard track but a few sections with longitudinal gullies. In wet conditions, however, the dirt road is slippery, muddy and quickly impassable, especially as there are some extreme inclines and declines to negotiate.
It is therefore strongly recommended that you ask a park ranger about the condition and passability of the route.
