“The Organ” is one of hundreds of monoliths in Arches National Park in Utah. The park is home to more than 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The various arches, monoliths, hoodoos, and petrified sand dunes are subjects of endless photo compositions.

Photography Tips

I set up for this shot from the end of the Park Avenue Trail, about 75 yards southwest of Arches Scenic Drive. Early morning and late afternoon/early evening works well here.

Travel Information

From the Arches National Park Entrance, drive 3.6 miles up the Arches Scenic Drive to the Courthouse Towers parking lot. Cross the road and descend to the slickrock canyon floor. Alternatively, drive 2.2 miles from the park entrance to the Park Avenue Trailhead and walk the 1 mile from the trailhead to where it again meets Arches Scenic Drive. The vast majority of visitors just walk 100 feet from the Park Avenue trailhead to the overlook. They’re missing out on one of my favorite hikes in the park. The hike includes different perspectives of the massive wall of sandstone fins, giant boulders strewn around the floor of the canyon, and the cluster of monoliths called “Three Gossips”.
