USA Not Cockeyed Falls

On the east side of Zion National Park, Scenic Route 9 winds it’s way through a seemingly endless expanse of slickrock. Few east side trails are identified in the park’s map and brochure that are handed to visitors as they enter the park but there are many routes and “meanders” throughout the area. The spot identified in this photo is rather difficult to get to without some scrambling and route finding skills but is worth the effort. There are numerous water pockets and pour offs along the route to Separation Canyon and Peak. This view is near the beginning and overlooks SR-9.

Photography Tips

There is some exposure, so watch your step. I’d recommend hiking with a friend whenever hiking in the back country of Zion. Cell phone coverage is spotty or non-existent so if you fall and are injured, you could be in trouble.

Travel Information

From the east entrance to the park, drive 1.3 miles (2.1km) or 2.6 miles (4.2km) east of the small tunnel to a pullout on either side of the road. Drop into the (normally) dry Pine Creek on the south side of the road and make your way westward about 150 yards, looking for a path that heads (south) up through the trees. This "path" will eventually top out on a small ridge to your left. Once atop the ridge, work down into the wash below. The wide open wash is Separation Canyon. Walk down canyon a short distance to see the twisted (and normally dry) falls as they enter Pine Creek below.
