Photographing Mount Whitney via Movie Road in California offers a dramatic and accessible way to capture the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. Movie Road—also known as Movie Flat Road—runs through the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine and provides iconic foregrounds of rounded granite boulders, natural arches, and desert textures that frame Mount Whitney and the Sierra Nevada crest beautifully. This location is popular with photographers because it allows clear, unobstructed views of Whitney without requiring a hike, making it ideal for sunrise, sunset, and night photography. Early morning and late afternoon light bring out strong contrast and depth on the mountain face, while winter storms and spring snowpack can add visual drama. The area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management, so visitors should stay on designated roads and respect posted closures. Weather can change quickly, and strong winds are common, but with proper planning, Movie Road remains one of the most visually striking and photographer-friendly viewpoints of Mount Whitney.

Photography Tips

Lots of great places to photograph the mountains from. I would highly recommend bringing both a wide and a Telephoto lens. I used a 24-70 and a 70-200 to capture both of these images. Also, get here 30 minutes before sunrise to get the great early morning light. When I visited in January, I was the only person there.

Travel Information

If you're staying in Lone Pine, it's only a 15-minute drive from town to this point. Its very accesable but if you plan on taking any of the alternative roads around the area, I would recommend using a Four Wheel Drive car.
