USA Agathla Peak
Agathla Peak, also known as El Capitan, is a volcanic plug rising about 450 metres above the desert plains of the Navajo Nation, just south of Monument Valley. Formed around 25 million years ago, the distinctive shape of the peak is the result of erosion exposing the solid igneous rock beneath the surface.
Photography Tips
At Agathla Peak, light makes the difference, sunrise, sunset, or even blue hour bring out the rock’s texture best. The formation often looks better from a distance, where its shape stands out more clearly against the landscape. Keep compositions simple, the peak itself is striking enough, so a clean foreground usually works best.
