USA Ely Elk Viewing Area
The Ely Elk Viewing Area is a convenient roadside destination that is worth checking out when touring the Great Basin Highway in central Nevada. The long valley that runs south of Ely has always been a primary feeding ground for herd animals and the Ely Elk Viewing Area offers a nice vantage point.
The parking area is a good pitch for motorhomes.
US Highway 50 is an important east-west road link in the USA. Longer sections of the route are now overlaid by interstate highways. However, some sections still exist as a simple highway, e.g. across Nevada between Great Basin National Park and Carson City.
In 1986, Life Magazine described this route, specifically the 287 miles (462 km) from Ely to Fernley, as the "Loneliest Road in America" in an article. The American Automobile Association (AAA) had told the magazine: "It's totally empty. There are no points of interest. We don't recommend it. We warn all motorists not to drive there, unless they're confident of their survival skills." The people who live along the road and the administrations of the towns along the route did not take kindly to this and have developed a "survival" counter-campaign for tourists.
In fact, the traffic on this route is manageable and driving on this road is relaxed. Trucks are very rare, and visibility is usually a few kilometers wide.
