USA Grey Whiskers Butte
Gray Whiskers Butte is a sandstone formation on Navajo Nation land, located just southwest of Monument Valley. Easily visible from US-163, it is one of the many buttes that shape the region’s iconic desert landscape. Spring and fall are generally the best seasons to visit.
Photography Tips
A telephoto lens is ideal for isolating the butte. Sunrise and sunset bring out the best colors and textures, while the quiet surroundings make it easy to try different compositions.
Travel Information
Gray Whiskers Butte is located just southwest of Monument Valley and is easily visible from US-163. There is no need to enter Monument Valley itself, and the formation can be photographed from public roadside locations without a high-clearance vehicle.
