Setting Hen is a sandstone formation in Monument Valley, known for its unusual shape. From the right angle, the rock resembles the claw of a giant crab rising from the desert, making it one of the more distinctive formations in the area. It can be seen from US-163 on Navajo Nation land.

Photography Tips

A telephoto lens works best here. Sunrise and sunset highlight the rock’s colors and textures, and the quiet location offers plenty of freedom to find the right composition.

Travel Information

Setting Hen is located along US-163 on Navajo Nation land, just south of Monument Valley. The formation is easily visible from the road, and no off-road driving is required. It can be photographed directly from public roadside pull-offs.
