Antarctica Moon Cliffs Deception Island
Deception Island is a unique volcanic island in Antarctica, formed as a flooded caldera that ships can sail directly into. It’s famous for its black sand beaches, steaming geothermal areas, and abandoned whaling station remains at Whalers Bay. Up to the south, almost to the entrance lies the moon cliffs, called after its shape.
Photography Tips
Place a person for scale in the frame! This will give a good impression of how big these cliffs are! An ultra wide angle lens is highly recommended here.
Travel Information
Travel there is only possible via expedition cruise, typically departing from Ushuaia and crossing the Drake Passage; landings depend heavily on weather and sea conditions. Visitors can walk among volcanic terrain, see wildlife like penguins and seals, and even experience warm water near the shore due to geothermal activity—though conditions are still harsh and highly unpredictable.
