Bruges Canal View Belgium

The Dijver is a watercourse and a road in the historical centre of Bruges. The route leads from the Gruuthusebrug to Rozenhoedkaai and Huidenvettersplein. The road of the same name lies on the southern bank of the Rei and leads from the Gruuthusebrug to Wollestraat and Rozenhoedkaai. The Dijver is part of the original Reie River and is spanned by the Gruuthusebrug and Johannes Nepomucenus bridges.

This name is one of the oldest in Bruges. The name comes from the Celtic period and comes from the Indo-Germanic deiwo, God or divine. It is a toponym which, like "Reie" (Rogia), means "holy water".

Today the road has a diverse function, including commercial and educational activities (College of Europe), gastronomy and, to a lesser extent, housing. There are also often disorder and folklore markets. With the Groeninge Museum, the Arentshuis and the Gruuthuse Museum, the Dijver also has an important museum function.
