Germany Wasserturm am Loburger Bahnhof
Built around 1895 as a vital component of the Prussian state railway's branch line terminus, this octagonal water tower in Loburg is a magnificent technical monument. Originally essential for quickly refilling arriving steam locomotives using gravity, the tower stands out due to its unusually elaborate, two-tone brickwork and delicate ornamentation. The four-story structure flares outwards elegantly at the top to accommodate the heavy water tank. Today, regular passenger service on the line connecting Burg, Möckern, and Loburg has sadly ceased—with the tracks beyond the nearby Altengrabow military training area completely dismantled. However, the station remains active thanks to occasional Bundeswehr transports and the passionate work of a local heritage railway association. Following critical interventions by the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz to save its desolate roof, the tower has been beautifully restored, preserving a vital piece of the region's industrial awakening.
Photography Tips
The tower offers fantastic, fresh perspectives from multiple angles, particularly from the Chausseestraße and the intersecting Triftweg.
Travel Information
Located directly on Chausseestraße behind the old Loburg train station, the site is highly accessible and offers an unobstructed view of the industrial ensemble. While you cannot catch a regular commuter train here anymore, the area is occasionally brought back to life by the heritage railway club keeping the era of steam locomotives alive. It is an excellent, quick architectural stop that perfectly complements a broader historical walking tour of Loburg, especially if you are already visiting the nearby "Unser Lieben Frauen" church ruins.
