Greenland Sediments at Sol Glacier, Scoresbysund

  • Please log in or sign up for free to see the GPS coordinates & weather for this photo spot
Sol Glacier flows directly into Scoresbysund, where meltwater carries large amounts of finely ground rock and sediment from beneath the glacier into the fjord. This glacial flour gives the water its distinctive milky, turquoise appearance and contributes to the thick layers of sediment deposited across the fjord over time.

Photography Tips

When launching from a moving sailboat, take off into the wind from a clear part of the deck and consider hand-catching when landing. And always keep a close eye on the wind and battery — flying away from a moving boat can quickly eat into your return time, especially in the unpredictable conditions around this fjord system.

Travel Information

Scoresbysund is one of the most remote places you can reach in Greenland. There are no roads or infrastructure here. The area is explored by sailing boat, smaller expedition vessel, kayak or multi-day guided kayak trips, with August to roughly mid-September being the best window to experience it. Just around 500 people coming per year.
