Greenland Cotton gras and Bear Islands hike, Scoresbysund

Bear Islands are a spectacular place to explore on foot, with soft tundra, glacially shaped terrain and dramatic mountain peaks rising around the fjords. Small mountain lakes and ponds offer beautiful opportunities for mirror-like reflections or the cotton gras forms a good difference to the rough mountains.

Get as low to the ground as possible to create a dynamic foreground that naturally leads the viewer’s eye toward your subject. A wide-angle lens works especially well here, allowing you to emphasize the foreground while still capturing the person and the dramatic mountains in the background. Place your subject thoughtfully within the frame to create a clear visual path from the foreground to the person and into the landscape.

Scoresbysund is one of the most remote places you can reach in Greenland. There are no roads or infrastructure here. The area is explored by sailing boat, smaller expedition vessel, kayak or multi-day guided kayak trips, with August to roughly mid-September being the best window to experience it. Just around 500 people coming per year.
