Greenland Røde Ø (Red Island) and iceberg graveyard, Scoresbysund

Røde Ø (Red Island) sits at the entrance to Rødefjord, surrounded by striking red sandstone and some of the largest concentrations of grounded icebergs in Scoresbysund. The shallow waters around the island trap the ice, creating an extensive “iceberg graveyard” where massive bergs remain stranded and slowly break apart and melt over time.

When launching from a moving small zodiac, take off from your hand and consider hand-catching when landing. Put off your sensors! And always keep a close eye on the wind and battery — flying away from a moving boat can quickly eat into your return time, especially in the unpredictable conditions around this fjord system.

Scoresbysund is one of the most remote places you can reach in Greenland. There are no roads or infrastructure here. The area is explored by sailing boat, smaller expedition vessel, kayak or multi-day guided kayak trips, with August to roughly mid-September being the best window to experience it. Just around 500 people coming per year.
