Iceland Solheimasandur Plance Wreck from the front
The DC-3 wreck site at Sólheimasandur is one of Iceland’s most eerie and fascinating landmarks. In 1973, a U.S. Navy Douglas DC-3 plane crashed on the black sand beach after running out of fuel. Miraculously, all crew members survived, but the plane was abandoned. Over the years, the skeleton of the plane has become a popular photography spot, standing starkly against the vast, desolate landscape. The wreck is accessible via a 4 km walk from the main road, adding an element of adventure for those who visit the remote site.
Photography Tips
To photograph the DC-3 wreck effectively, use a wide-angle lens to capture both the plane and its dramatic surroundings, including the vast black sand. Shooting during sunrise or sunset adds soft, atmospheric light that enhances the mood. Use HDR techniques by taking multiple exposures at different shutter speeds to balance the bright sky and shadowy wreck; this preserves detail in both highlights and shadows. A tripod is essential for keeping the framing consistent during bracketed shots. Including a silhouetted figure can add depth and scale, while experimenting with low angles or close-ups of the rusted details emphasizes the plane’s textures and presence in the landscape. In snowy conditions, slight overexposure helps retain foreground details.
Travel Information
The wreck is located about 4 kilometers from the Sólheimasandur car park along the Ring Road. While walking the flat trail is possible, many visitors opt for the shuttle bus that runs regularly between the parking area and the wreck site, especially in colder months. The terrain is exposed and often windy, so dress accordingly and wear good footwear. No permits or entry fees are required. There are no facilities at the site.
