Standing in front of Sólheimajökull felt like looking at a living landscape — ice shaped by time, streaked with volcanic ash, surrounded by dark mountains and moody Icelandic skies.

It is one of those places where you can really feel how powerful and fragile nature is at the same time. The glacier is constantly moving, melting, changing, and revealing new textures, colors, and patterns with every season.

A beautiful, dramatic, and humbling stop along Iceland’s South Coast.

Photography Tips

Expose for the ice, not the sky.
Glaciers can easily lose detail in the bright areas. Slightly underexpose, then recover shadows later in editing.

Look for contrast.
Sólheimajökull has amazing texture: white ice, blue tones, black volcanic ash, dark mountains, and cloudy skies. Try to frame those contrasts together.

Travel Information

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull, located on Iceland’s South Coast. It is one of the easiest glaciers to access from the Ring Road, which makes it a popular stop between Skógafoss and Vík. Visit South Iceland notes that the glacier tongue reaches down toward the lowlands, giving visitors good access from the parking area.

It is about 158 km / 98 miles east of Reykjavík, making it possible as a long day trip or as part of a South Coast route. Most visitors either self-drive or join a guided South Coast tour that includes the glacier.

For casual visitors, the main experience is the walk from the parking area toward the glacier viewpoint and lagoon. For anyone wanting to step onto the ice, a guided glacier hike is strongly recommended because the surface can be slippery, cracked, and dangerous without proper equipment. Local tour operators run glacier walks from the parking area.
