Iceland Minimalistic structures, Landmannalaugar
Landmannalaugar is one of Iceland’s most spectacular Highland landscapes, famous for its intensely colorful rhyolite mountains, geothermal activity and the beginning of the Laugavegur trail. The colors shift between orange, red, yellow, green and blue, creating a landscape that almost feels painted.
Photography Tips
Try a longer focal length to isolate individual ridges, colorful mountain layers or small details in the landscape. Compressing the perspective helps simplify the scene into clean shapes, colors and layers, creating almost abstract images that feel more like minimalist art than traditional landscape photography. Look for strong contrasts between the orange, red, yellow and green mountains and leave plenty of negative space in the frame.
Travel Information
Landmannalaugar can be reached via the Highland F-roads, primarily F208 and the final section F224. A suitable 4x4 vehicle permitted for F-roads is required, and conditions can include river crossings; always check the current road conditions before driving.
For the Laugavegur hike, taking a Highland bus to Landmannalaugar is usually the most practical option. The trail is a one-way route of around 55 km, starting in Landmannalaugar and ending in Þórsmörk, so you don't have to worry about getting your car back to the starting point. Several seasonal bus services connect Reykjavík with Landmannalaugar, and buses can also take you back from Þórsmörk after finishing the hike.
For Laugavegur specifically, I’d recommend the bus: because the trail is not a loop, driving there means you would need to arrange transport back to your car in Landmannalaugar. The bus makes the logistics much easier. Get dropped off at the trailhead, hike all the way to Þórsmörk, and take a bus back from the other end.
