About the location
Founded in 1177 by John de Courcy, the castle has survived centuries of military action and sieges, which is reflected in its sturdy masonry and defensive layout. For photographers, the massive four-story keep and the surrounding curtain walls offer excellent opportunities for architectural studies. The proximity to the modern harbour allows for a unique juxtaposition of ancient stone against colorful fishing boats and yachts, providing excellent foreground elements for wide-angle compositions. Inside, the Great Hall and various vaulted chambers provide moody, low-light environments suitable for capturing the atmospheric essence of medieval life.
