About the location
The cathedral's roof, featuring over 230,000 glazed tiles, is a highlight for any photographer, especially when captured from the heights of the North Tower or the South Tower, known locally as Steffl. These tiles form the double-headed eagle of the Habsburg Empire and the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria, which are best seen from the observation decks. The interior is a treasure trove of Gothic and Baroque art, with high-vaulted ceilings and the ornate stone pulpit providing dramatic subjects for wide-angle compositions. Photographers should pay close attention to the light at different times of day, as the stained glass creates changing color patterns on the stone floors and pillars. The exterior walls also offer interesting details, such as the historic measurement standards for bread and cloth and the 'O5' resistance symbol from World War II.
