About the location
The bridge itself consists of two structures, a historic wrought-iron truss bridge and a newer concrete one, providing diverse architectural interest for industrial or landscape compositions. The milky blue color of the water, caused by fine glacial silt known as rock flour, is particularly vivid here, making it one of the most photogenic river crossings in the Canterbury region. Beyond the bridge itself, the Rakaia Gorge Walkway provides access to several elevated viewpoints that allow for expansive landscape shots capturing the winding river's path through the foothills.
