Norway Ingøy
Ingøy is a remote island at 71°N in Måsøy municipality, Finnmark, on the far northern coast of Norway. Facing the open Barents Sea, the island offers a rugged and largely untouched coastal landscape with small mountains, marshlands, white sandy beaches, rocky shores and a traditional fishing village. Just offshore lies Fruholmen Lighthouse, Norway’s northernmost lighthouse.
Photography Tips
Ingøy is an excellent destination for landscape, seascape and wildlife photography. The open terrain provides great opportunities for photographing dramatic Arctic weather, coastal scenery, the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights during the darker months. The island is also particularly known for its rich birdlife, making it a rewarding location for bird and wildlife photographers.
Travel Information
Ingøy has no road connection to mainland Norway, so the island is reached by boat. The easiest way is by the local express passenger ferry from Havøysund or Hammerfest, which has regular connections to Ingøy. Havøysund can be reached by car via Norwegian County Road 889, or by Hurtigruten/Havila coastal ships.
The ferry arrives at the small harbour in the village of Ingøy. There are only a few local roads on the island, and no regular car ferry, so exploring is mainly done on foot. Most photographic locations can be reached by walking from the village, although good outdoor footwear is highly recommended due to the wet, uneven and exposed Arctic terrain.
Ferry schedules vary by season and day of the week, so check the current timetable before travelling. Weather conditions can also affect boat services, particularly outside the summer season.
