Portugal Capela de Santo António (Nave de Santo António)
Located in the unique alpine plateau known as Nave de Santo António within the Serra da Estrela Nature Park, this small stone chapel stands as a beautiful testament to the region's rural history. Surrounded by vast fields of yellow mountain grass, low shrubs, and striking granite rock formations, it looks incredibly picturesque against the dramatic montane backdrop. Photographers should visit this spot to capture the raw, untamed essence of Portugal's highest mountain range, combined with a timeless piece of traditional stone architecture.
Photography Tips
Best Timing: Early morning or golden hour before sunset provides the softest light to accentuate the texture of the granite stone and golden mountain grass. Dramatic, overcast skies also complement the moody, isolated look of the location.Composition: Use the large granite rocks in the foreground to guide the viewer’s eye toward the chapel. A wide-angle lens works perfectly to capture both the chapel and the vast mountain landscape behind it.Camera Settings: Keep a narrow aperture (around f/8 to f/11) to maintain sharp detail from the foreground grass all the way to the distant peaks.
Travel Information
How to Get There: The chapel is easily accessible via the N338 road that connects Manteigas to the summit area near Torre. It sits right in the Nave de Santo António plateau area.Parking: There are gravel pull-offs and small open spaces along the roadside near the plateau where you can park for free. From the roadside, it is a very short, easy walk through flat terrain to reach the chapel.Important Note: In winter months, check local road statuses before departing, as high-altitude sections of the N338 can close due to heavy snow and ice.
