Svalbard & Jan Mayen Islands Alkefjellet, Hilopenstretet
The Alkefjellet are cliffs in Hinlopenstretet on the north-eastern side of Spitsbergen and home to around 60,000 pairs of thick-billed murre, guillemots, numerous kittiwakes, glaucous-winged gulls and kittiwakes. It's not just the sight and sound of the birds, but also the cliffs themselves: Impressive and absolutely unique.
Photography Tips
Here you can use your full camera gear range. From a wide angle to get all the cliffs on one picture to a tele-zoom lens for some close up shots from the cliffs or the thousands of birds. Everything is worth it here. Just take care on your equipment during the bumpy zodiac drive.
The thick-billed murre is the most common bird here. Try to focus them during their flights with a high shutter and a tele-zoom lens. You will get many attempts so be patient. Your chance is 100%!
