Svalbard & Jan Mayen Islands Virgohamna Monument
Virgohamna feels like a forgotten edge of the world, where rusting expedition remains still lie scattered across the Arctic shoreline. Once a launch site for daring polar balloon expeditions in the late 19th century, the bay carries an eerie atmosphere of ambition, isolation, and survival.
Photography Tips
If you are a bit further away from the monument and use a zoom, you will get a good clear separation from the subject and the landscape.
Travel Information
Most travelers reach Virgohamna by expedition ship from Longyearbyen, usually as part of an Arctic cruise around Spitsbergen. This is mostly only doable by a multi-day journey, not by a day trip.
