United Kingdom Black Rock Cottage
Lagangarbh Cottage (or the Black Rock Cottage) offers the perfect scene for a landscape photographer. Located at the foot of Buachaille Etive Mor and with the river next to it, it is a beautiful place to work with. It’s quite a busy spot, especially at the bridge and along the river.
Photography Tips
Best to get here early. Bring a tripod, wind and waterproofs, etc.
Rubber boots are a good choice of footwear if the grass is wet. Plan more time for this shot because there is just so much to look for and so much to work with.
The cottage can be shot from several different angles and with lots of different foregrounds. Try to use the river for possible reflections and to give the photo some more interest. The view from the bridge is spectacular, but also quite hard to deal with if the sky is bright, especially during sunset. Bring an ND-Filter for this location and try to vary your shutter speed and get a few different exposures with different shutter speeds.
All year round, preferably when there’s a lot of water running down the river.
Early in the morning is great to catch the first morning light hitting the Buachaille and it’s easier to balance the exposure because the sky in the background won’t be burned out.
At sunset, the Buachaille will get this beautiful warm side light hitting it from the right. The skies have a good chance of being dramatic and colourful as well.
