The Storchenhof Loburg is a profoundly heartwarming bird sanctuary and environmental education center located in the Jerichower Land. Established in 1979 by the Kaatz family, this dedicated facility lovingly rehabilitates around 50 to 70 injured or orphaned storks each year, alongside various other bird species, giving them a second chance at life in the wild. The sanctuary is also heavily involved in scientific research, famously utilizing satellite telemetry to track stork migration routes. The absolute icon of this research was the female white stork "Prinzesschen," who arrived at the sanctuary in 1993. Thanks to a fitted transmitter, her incredible 10,000-kilometer journey all the way to South Africa was meticulously documented, making her the most famous stork in Germany. Today, a beautiful dedicated memorial on the grounds honors her enduring legacy and her contribution to science.

Photography Tips

Photographing at the sanctuary offers an exceptional and highly ethical opportunity for wildlife photography. Because the storks are accustomed to the caregivers and the sanctuary environment, you can capture incredibly intimate, natural behaviors—such as feeding, grooming, and nest-building—without causing the birds any stress. Focusing on the striking contrast of their vibrant red beaks against the crisp white and black plumage yields fantastic wildlife portraits. The facility's open layout allows you to elegantly use the lush, green background of the enclosures and the natural sky to beautifully isolate the birds in your frame. Taking the time to also photograph the historic Prinzesschen memorial perfectly captures the scientific spirit of this special location.

Travel Information

The sanctuary is wonderfully accessible, offering dedicated parking directly on the premises for a completely stress-free arrival. Exploring the beautifully maintained grounds is highly educational; an on-site exhibition provides deep insights into the fascinating life cycle and migration patterns of the white stork. If you are moved by the incredible conservation work being done here, you even have the wonderful opportunity to take on a personal sponsorship (Patenschaft) to financially support the care of the resident birds. After immersing yourself in the loving atmosphere of the Storchenhof, taking a short walk into the nearby historic center of Loburg perfectly rounds out your day trip in the Jerichower Land.
