About the location
Built in the mid-1960s to replace the Aust Ferry, this Grade I listed structure is famous for its revolutionary aero-foil shaped deck. Photographers are drawn to the bridge for its graceful suspension cables and the way the two massive towers anchor the scene against the horizon. The surrounding landscape is dominated by the River Severn's extreme tidal range, which at low tide reveals a complex network of mudflats, rocks, and tidal pools that provide exceptional foreground interest. On the English side, the cliffs at Aust offer an elevated vantage point, while the Welsh side near Chepstow provides a different perspective of the bridge as it curves toward the Wye Valley. The interplay between the industrial steel of the bridge and the raw, natural power of the estuary creates a compelling contrast for both color and black-and-white photography.
