About the location
Its dramatic position overlooking the Lorelei rock makes it a quintessential subject for landscape and architectural photography in Germany.\n\nBuilt in the late 14th century by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, the castle's compact and defensive architecture is characterized by its central round tower and flanking walls. Photographers are drawn to its interaction with the surrounding vineyards and the winding river below. Because the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, the best photographic opportunities come from the opposite bank of the Rhine in St. Goar or from the various hiking trails like the Rheinsteig that offer elevated perspectives of the structure against the valley's steep slopes.
