Traveling

To reach Skarðsviti, follow Road 54 along the northern side of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula near Hellissandur. A small, unpaved track leads toward the coast; while a 4x4 is not strictly necessary in the summer months, it is highly recommended for navigating the gravel and potential potholes during the wetter seasons. There is a small gravel area near the lighthouse where you can park, but photographers should be extremely mindful of the wind when opening car doors, as gusts in this area can be powerful enough to cause damage.

Use a wide-angle lens to include the vast Icelandic sky and the leading lines of the coastal path or rocky outcrops that point toward the structure. If the sea is rough, a long exposure with a 6-stop or 10-stop ND filter can blur the waves into a misty texture, emphasizing the lighthouse's permanence. Don't forget a sturdy tripod, as the winds on the peninsula can be exceptionally strong, making sharp long exposures a challenge.
