About the location
Built primarily as a toll collection point in the 14th century, the castle's architecture is shaped like a galley to withstand the heavy currents and ice floes of the river. Its stark white walls and black roofs offer high contrast, which is perfect for both color and black-and-white photography. Because it sits in the middle of the river, it remains largely untouched by modern urbanization in its immediate vicinity. This allows for clean, minimalist shots or complex landscape compositions that include the surrounding hills of the Rhine Gorge, making it a versatile location for various photographic styles.
